Believe it or not, what you do at home has everything to do with just how well your sugaring session goes. Since both of us want you to have the best sugaring session evah, here are a few things that will make your session smooth.
- Exfoliation and hydration. Now before you rush to your bathroom and grab whatever fabulous smelling sugaring scrub you have on hand, know that this is NOT what we mean. Most of the exfoliation scrubs on the market are packed in ingredients that are actually counter-productive to sugaring, especially oil. Nor do we want you to slather on the latest popular moisturizing lotion. Also usually full of ingredients that will prevent us from doing our job well. What we DO mean by exfoliation and hydration is exfoliation gloves and water-based lotion. Exfoliation gloves are gentle enough to be used daily and can be washed with your towels regularly. You don't need to use a lot of pressure either. Just gentle circular motions. Of course we recommend our Silky Streak Lotion, but if you don't have that handy, Aveeno Baby Lotion or CeraVe Daily Moisturizing Lotion are our go-to.
- Don't shave. Really. When your Sugarist says 7-10 days of growth, know that we know when you bring us 5 days. This is our JOB y'all. We know, you're a slow grower...(did you hear our eyes roll?!) but we really DO need those 7-10 days, especially if this is your first session with the Sugarist. This gives us a chance to get to know your skin, have better extractions and see which stage of hair growth you're in. That last one matters so we can get your the most time between your sugaring sessions and allows us to refine and diminish your hair.
- Bathe. You wouldn't think we'd need to say this but we do. Please shower the morning of your session and use the aforementioned exfoliation gloves and lotion.
- Plan your post-sugaring time. It may sound silly but every little thing can matter, from your activities to the clothing on your skin. Sugaring exfoliates your skin and opens hair follicles (we are removing the hair by the root after all.). For the next few days you want to wear breathable cotton whenever possible, do your best to not do anything that's going to make you glisten, much less sweat and avoid the sun - or suntanning beds for that matter.
- Reactions can happen. More often than not, they're histamine reactions. Yes, your body is actually doing it's job when it creates hives or pustules but it isn't typically an allergic reaction to sugaring. When you remove hair by the root, the body sees it as an attack. It's can react as though it's under attack by ants or bees. Taking an anti-histamine (if you're able) or using an anti-histamine cream can be helpful. Your Sugarist can also provide techniques at the time of service such as microcurrent or high frequency, even a clay mask that can help reduce the chance of a histamine reaction.
- When you're headed to your session, please do not use any lotions, serums or creams for 24 hours ahead of time. Really. Remember when we listed those things earlier that prevent us from doing our job? Yeah...we don't want to tell you we can't get your hair out because you didn't follow instructions and now you have a barrier on your skin that prevents us from getting your hair out.
- Relax and ask us any questions you have. Any. Trust us, we've heard it all and then some. We are going to do everything we can to create the most comfortable sugaring session we can.
You should get plenty of information from your Sugarist, but never be afraid to touch base, ask questions and get direction. In the meantime, we hope this helps you get the most out of your sugaring sessions.
